Beckham's Future Under Capello
Dec. 18, 2007
Had Fabio Capello been appointed England manager last January, David Beckham's international future would have been widely written off.
His career at Real Madrid seemed finished when Capello said that his decision to join the Los Angeles Galaxy meant that he would never again play for the club.
"A player who has such an important contract with another club, we cannot count on him," said Capello. Yet by June, the transformation was complete. Beckham had quietly proved his dedication on the training pitch and Capello duly played him regularly in a team that put together a fantastic run to clinch the league title.
Capello is not known for dishing out excessive praise to his players, but his words yesterday suggested a genuine respect for the former England captain. "A great man," he said. "When David Beckham sets his mind to something, he will usually achieve it."
Beckham has set his mind to playing in the World Cup, when he will be 35, and Capello has clearly not dismissed that possibility. Beckham's greatest attribute has always been his crossing ability rather than electric pace and, even if he is unable to play a full 90 minutes, his potential impact as a substitute is clear.
Beckham and Peter Crouch were the two players to come out of the defeat against Croatia with any credit and it would be a surprise if he is not given the chance to lead England out for his 100th cap against Switzerland on Feb 6.
In the longer term, much will depend on the opinion of Capello's fitness trainer, Massimo Neri. Neri is an expert on the conditioning of players and, having worked with Beckham in Madrid , will come armed with extensive statistical records against which any physical decline since joining the Galaxy can be measured.
Beckham, though, should not be under-estimated and it is likely that his own knowledge of Capello's high standards will ensure that he trains with real dedication over the forthcoming months to prolong his international career.

The Galaxy opened their stadium, the Home Depot Center on June 7. But in order for their home to be ready, the team had to play a record 8 games to start the season and failed to win a game. In fact, the Galaxy finish the season without a win away from home the whole season. After the season's final game, the Galaxy had the final playoff spot in the West. In their aggregate series with the Earthquakes, they seemed well on to vindication for the MLS Cup loss 2 years earlier as they held 4 goals to 0 lead midway through the 2 nd game. A thing happened as the Earthquakes scored four unanswered goals to force a tiebreaker. In that session, the Earthquakes' Rodrigo Farina score to send the Quakes onto the next round.
In 2004 Looking to return to the top, the Galaxy would go through a mediocre 1 st half of the season before 3 straight wins over the summer. But from July 14 on, the Galaxy won only 2 more games, one in September and one in October. The Galaxy had a record of 11-9-10, good enough for 2nd in the West and the playoff, remaining the only club in MLS to have a playoff spot in every year of league in the playoffs, the Galaxy withstood an early challenge from the Rapids to win the aggregate goal series, 2-1, scoring 2 times in Game 2. In the conference final, the Galaxy's season would come to an end in Kansas with a 2-0 loss to Arnaud and the Wizards.
