Beckham and LA Galaxy to Play Minnesota Thunder on Nov. 11th
Oct. 23, 2007
The Minnesota Thunder announced today the rescheduled date for the inaugural Copa Minnesota soccer match. On Sunday, November 11 at 5:30 p.m., the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome will play host to international soccer superstar David Beckham and his team, the Los Angeles Galaxy, in a match against the Minnesota Thunder.
In response to making the event more family-affordable, tickets have been re-priced starting at $15 for the lower bowl. A portion of the proceeds will benefit various children's charities such as Thunder P.L.U.S. and Foundation IX.
Copa Minnesota is Beckham's only scheduled US visit to a non-MLS city and one of his only appearances anywhere during the 2007 MLS season, due to his injuries. Beckham, celebrated throughout the world for his unparalleled abilities on the pitch, joined the Los Angeles Galaxy in January after mega-successful tenures with Real Madrid, Manchester United, and the English national team.
Copa Minnesota will be an annual event hosted by the Thunder that will bring top soccer teams from across North America to battle for the Copa Minnesota trophy.
"We are thrilled that the first Copa Minnesota will feature our own Minnesota Thunder in a match against the LA Galaxy," said Thunder president and director of soccer operations Manny Lagos. "With our new team ownership and the emphasis we are putting on bringing home another championship to Minnesota , we wanted to showcase our hometown team against the Galaxy and their superstar David Beckham. This is an amazing soccer event that will certainly boost local and regional interest in the sport and we wanted to make it affordable for everybody."
The LA Galaxy are led by head coach Frank Yallop, who most recently coached the Canadian National Team after winning two MLS Cup Championships with the San Jose Earthquakes (MLS). In addition to Beckham, the Galaxy's roster includes a number of U.S. national team members including two of the USA 's most capped players: Cobi Jones (164 games) and Landon Donovan (94 games). Donovan became the US National Team's all-time leading goal scorer in 2007. The Galaxy narrowly missed the 2007 playoffs this year after winning five of their last seven matches.
Various youth charities will benefit from the ticket sales including Thunder P.L.U.S. and Foundation IX.
