Recap:
Kansas City Wizards Fall 1-0 to Los Angeles Galaxy in Front of Record Crowd
Sept. 28, 2007
The Kansas City Wizards drew a record crowd of 32,867 fans Thursday at Arrowhead Stadium, and they remained loud and enthusiastic throughout the match. The Cauldron perpetually waved new Bavarian flags and the entire crowd erupted into the "wave" for five minutes in the second half. The Los Angeles Galaxy, however, captured a 1-0 victory after the Wizards had been sent down a man on a red card to captain Jimmy Conrad and later midfielder Davy Arnaud.
The Wizards offered a multitude of entertainment options surrounding an exciting 90 minutes of soccer that included an appearance by Beatles' tribute band Liverpool , a Soccer Celebration that boasted upwards of 40 vendors, a fireworks show and autographs from the squad after the match. Following that, the Wizards players will attend a post-game party held at Martini Corner in mid-town Kansas City .
On this historic evening, the Wizards nearly opened the scoring in the 3rd minute. Defender Nick Garcia put playmaker Carlos Marinelli through the Galaxy defense with a long pass out of midfield. Marinelli turned and attempted to cross, but his left-footed effort hit the back of Galaxy midfielder Cobi Jones, redirecting straight at the Galaxy goal. The ball bounced off the left upright, however, and out of bounds.
The Wizards again had a threat denied by a post in the 10th minute. Midfielder Davy Arnaud found forward Eddie Johnson in space at the top of the penalty area. Johnson took one touch before firing with his right foot toward goal. The shot beat Galaxy goalkeeper Joe Cannon, but hit off the right post, ending the opportunity.
Los Angeles ' first opportunity came in the 13th minute when forward Alan Gordon headed a ball wide of the back post off a cross from Landon Donovan.
Johnson again caused problems in the 16th minute, collecting a ball 30 yards from goal and running at the Los Angeles defense. Johnson fired from 18 yards out, but Cannon covered his shot.
Marinelli hooked up with Johnson just three minutes later, putting the speedy striker in behind the defense. Cannon came off his line quickly, forcing Johnson to shoot early and just wide of the far post.
The Galaxy again threatened their own goal in the 32nd minute, after an Arnaud cross. Defender Troy Roberts tried to clear the ball, but his effort deflected backward toward his own goal. Cannon had to extend fully to parry the ball over the bar and save an own goal.
Just seconds later, defender Jimmy Conrad got on the end of a Michael Harrington cross and headed the ball inches over the crossbar at the back post as Cannon attempted to get his hand to the effort.
Kansas City had the first quality opportunity of the second half, as Marinelli put fellow Argentinean Eloy Colombano through the Galaxy defense. Colombano ran at the goal at pace, rounding goalkeeper Cannon. His effort from a tough angle, however, missed the open goal wide right.
The match changed just two minutes later, as defender and captain Jimmy Conrad was shown a straight red card for a tackle at midfield on Galaxy midfielder Pete Vagenas. Los Angeles used the extra space to eventually get the game-winning goal.
Marinelli's deft left foot almost gave the Wizards the lead in the 73rd minute, as his chip from 35 yards out missed just inches high with Cannon scrambling to get back to his goal line.
Midfielder Jose Luis Burciaga Jr., playing midfield for the first time this season, came within inches of a goal in the 78th minute after drawing a foul 20 yards from goal in the center of the field. Burciaga, Arnaud and defender Jack Jewsbury all stood over the ball, with Arnaud and Burciaga starting their runs toward the ball. Arnaud paused at the last moment, allowing Burciaga to unleash a left-footed rocket that bent around the Galaxy wall, only to miss by just inches wide of the back post.
Galaxy found their lone goal in the 80th minute; when defender Mike Randolph connected with substitute forward Gavin Glinton. Randolph received the ball on the left wing, holding the ball momentarily while Glinton made his run to the back post. Randolph swung in a left-footed cross that Glinton met inside the goal area for the Galaxy's tally.
Kansas City received a second blow in the 82nd minute, when Arnaud was shown a straight red on another tackle against Vagenes in midfield. It was just the 3rd time in Wizards history that they suffered two ejections in a single match.
The Wizards continued pushing forward even down two men, winning two corner kicks and a dangerous free kick in the last five minutes. They were unable to convert, however, and the game ended with a 1-0 score line, even though the Wizards outshot LA 10-3 on the night and played arguably their best half of the season in the opening stanza.
The Wizards are off until next Friday, October 5, when they host D.C. United at 7 p.m. CT on Fan Appreciation Night. The Wizards have an impressive array of fan activities planned including special adidas merchandise and prizes throughout the evening.

The Galaxy opened their stadium, the Home Depot Center on June 7. But in order for their home to be ready, the team had to play a record 8 games to start the season and failed to win a game. In fact, the Galaxy finish the season without a win away from home the whole season. After the season's final game, the Galaxy had the final playoff spot in the West. In their aggregate series with the Earthquakes, they seemed well on to vindication for the MLS Cup loss 2 years earlier as they held 4 goals to 0 lead midway through the 2 nd game. A thing happened as the Earthquakes scored four unanswered goals to force a tiebreaker. In that session, the Earthquakes' Rodrigo Farina score to send the Quakes onto the next round.
In 2004 Looking to return to the top, the Galaxy would go through a mediocre 1 st half of the season before 3 straight wins over the summer. But from July 14 on, the Galaxy won only 2 more games, one in September and one in October. The Galaxy had a record of 11-9-10, good enough for 2nd in the West and the playoff, remaining the only club in MLS to have a playoff spot in every year of league in the playoffs, the Galaxy withstood an early challenge from the Rapids to win the aggregate goal series, 2-1, scoring 2 times in Game 2. In the conference final, the Galaxy's season would come to an end in Kansas with a 2-0 loss to Arnaud and the Wizards.
