Recap:
Los Angeles Galaxy Beats FC Dallas, 2-1
Sept. 24, 2007
The Los Angeles Galaxy kept their slim playoff hopes alive with a 2-1 victory over FC Dallas at The Home Depot Center Sunday evening.
After Dax McCarty gave the visitors the early lead in the game, Landon Donovan scored a penalty kick goal in the 25th minute and Chris Klein blasted a shot home in late in the second half for the game-winner.
With the win, the Galaxy (5-13-6) move into a tie with Toronto for the bottom spot in the league with 21 points, but with 18 points still left on the table in their last six games, they are not mathematically eliminated from the Major League Soccer postseason just yet.
Dallas , on the other hand, dropped its fourth contest in its last six league fixtures, but is still firmly in third place in the Western table. The top two clubs - CD Chivas USA and Houston - are now pulling away, meaning the Hoops' chances of getting the top seed in the Western playoffs are slim. Dallas is seven points back of leaders Chivas, who also have a game in hand.
The game started well for the Hoops (12-10-4) when McCarty scored his first- career MLS goal in the 11th minute.
Dallas defender Chris Gbandi tool control of the ball on the left flank and crossed into the Galaxy penalty area, and after forward Carlos Ruiz charged, the defender went with him, leaving McCarty open in behind. Ruiz then dummied past the ball, giving McCarty an open shot, which he buried.
Things were going well for the Hoops until about 10 minutes later. It started when Gbandi received a yellow card for arguing in the 21st minute, then he received another yellow just two minutes later when he pulled down Klein in the penalty area.
Not only was Gbandi ejected, but referee Michael Kennedy gave the Galaxy a penalty kick, which Donovan finished for his seventh goal of the season. It was also his second-straight game with a penalty kick goal.
The Hoops packed in their high powered lineup in an effort to earn a point while playing down a man the rest of the game, which seemed like it was going to work until Klein's game-winner 18 minutes from time.
Veteran winger Cobi Jones controlled the ball in the offensive third, drove into the box and laid a pass back to Klein at the top right corner of the area. Klein took one touch and fired a knuckling laser into the top right corner of the net for his second goal of the season and first in a Galaxy uniform.
The Galaxy will be back in action Thursday when they travel to Kansas city to take on the Wizards on MLS Primetime while Dallas is back in action next Sunday when they host Texas rivals Houston.
Game Note: With the start in Sunday's game, Jones became just the fourth player in the history of MLS to play in 300 regular season games. He joins leader Steve Ralston, Chris Henderson and Jason Kries on the list. Besides Jones, Ralston, who plays for the New England Revolution, is the only active player on the list.

The Galaxy opened their stadium, the Home Depot Center on June 7. But in order for their home to be ready, the team had to play a record 8 games to start the season and failed to win a game. In fact, the Galaxy finish the season without a win away from home the whole season. After the season's final game, the Galaxy had the final playoff spot in the West. In their aggregate series with the Earthquakes, they seemed well on to vindication for the MLS Cup loss 2 years earlier as they held 4 goals to 0 lead midway through the 2 nd game. A thing happened as the Earthquakes scored four unanswered goals to force a tiebreaker. In that session, the Earthquakes' Rodrigo Farina score to send the Quakes onto the next round.
In 2004 Looking to return to the top, the Galaxy would go through a mediocre 1 st half of the season before 3 straight wins over the summer. But from July 14 on, the Galaxy won only 2 more games, one in September and one in October. The Galaxy had a record of 11-9-10, good enough for 2nd in the West and the playoff, remaining the only club in MLS to have a playoff spot in every year of league in the playoffs, the Galaxy withstood an early challenge from the Rapids to win the aggregate goal series, 2-1, scoring 2 times in Game 2. In the conference final, the Galaxy's season would come to an end in Kansas with a 2-0 loss to Arnaud and the Wizards.
